Similar(H 3436)
A Concurrent Resolution to congratulate Mr. Pat Veltre, one of Sumter's most
distinguished conductors and band directors, upon his retirement and to
express to him sincere thanks for all he has done on behalf of the citizens of
Sumter County.
01/24/95 Senate Introduced, adopted, sent to House SJ-27
01/25/95 House Introduced, adopted, returned with concurrence HJ-11
A CONCURRENT
RESOLUTION
TO CONGRATULATE MR. PAT VELTRE, ONE OF SUMTER'S
MOST DISTINGUISHED CONDUCTORS AND BAND
DIRECTORS, UPON HIS RETIREMENT AND TO EXPRESS TO
HIM SINCERE THANKS FOR ALL HE HAS DONE ON
BEHALF OF THE CITIZENS OF SUMTER COUNTY.
Whereas, the members of the General Assembly have learned with
deep regret that Pat Veltre, one of Sumter County's most
distinguished conductors and band directors, will be retiring in
December, 1994, during the legislative interim; and
Whereas, Pat Veltre has spent forty-five years entertaining
audiences in such faraway places as Iceland, Thailand, and Burma
and closer to home in Patriot Hall and in the gymnasiums and
football fields of Sumter area schools; and
Whereas, he is known as well for his volunteer work in Sumter's
musical community where he directed the Sumter Community
Band, the Civic Chorale, the Jazz Ensemble, the choir of St. Anne's
Catholic Church, as well as musicals for the Sumter Little Theatre.
He organized the annual fund-raiser for the Society for the
Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and helped bring other musical
events to Sumter as a board member and president of the Sumter-Shaw Community Concert Association; and
Whereas, he is a native of Pennsylvania and received a bachelor's
degree in music education from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
He then joined the Air Force in 1950 and had a twenty-year career
in military bands. It was during his career as an Air Force
conductor that he traveled the world, playing for troops stationed
overseas, for military affairs and galas, and for four presidents; and
Whereas, after retiring from the Air Force, Pat Veltre began a
second career as band director for Sumter School District 2. He
subsequently directed the marching band and concert bands at
Hillcrest High School, as well as bands at Ebenezer Junior High
School, Shaw Heights Elementary School, Oakland Middle School,
and Mayewood High School; and
Whereas, in 1990 he retired for a second time, but nevertheless
continued to donate countless hours to Sumter's musical community
and has received statewide acclaim for his work as director of the
Sumter City Chorale and the Sumter Community Band; and
Whereas, the respect with which this truly outstanding South
Carolinian is held is evidenced by the proclaiming of December 11,
1994, as "Patrick Veltre Day" in Sumter by local
leaders; and
Whereas, the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution,
would like to extend to Mr. Veltre on behalf of the citizens of
Sumter their sincere thanks as he bids farewell to his stage-conducting career. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives
concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly hereby congratulate Mr.
Pat Veltre, one of Sumter's most distinguished conductors and band
directors, upon his retirement and to express to him sincere thanks
for all he has done on behalf of the citizens of Sumter County.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to
Mr. Pat Veltre.
