TO WELCOME DR. BERNICE A. KING TO THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA ON THE OCCASION OF THE 2006 MLK DREAM WEEKEND TO BE HELD IN THE CITY OF GREENVILLE, AND TO COMMEND DR. KING FOR HER EFFORTS TO CONTINUE THE LEGACY OF IMPROVING THE CONDITIONS OF ALL MANKIND THAT WAS CHAMPIONED BY HER FATHER DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR., AND CONTINUES TO BE FORGED BY HER MOTHER CORETTA SCOTT KING.

Whereas, Dr. Bernice A. King, the youngest daughter of Coretta Scott King and the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., began her oratorical journey when she addressed the United Nations at age seventeen; and

Whereas, her life experiences and motivational skills have provided her opportunities to be a speaker at the White House, DuPont Corporation, Warner-Lambert Corporation, AT&T, the UniversityNext of North Carolina, Duke PreviousUniversityNext, and throughout Europe, South America, and Australia; and

Whereas, she obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Spelman College, and a Masters of Divinity and Doctorate of Laws degrees from Emory PreviousUniversity; and

Whereas, Dr. King is an ordained preacher and is a minister at New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in Lithonia, Georgia; and

Whereas, her strong concern for improving the conditions of the various communities throughout the Atlanta area led her to serve as a law clerk in the Fulton County, Georgia Juvenile Court System under Judge Glenda Hatchett, where she interacted with troubled boys and girls, and served as a mentor to a group of fifth grade girls at an inner-city Atlanta elementary school; and

Whereas, Dr. King has been a guest on the Oprah Winfrey Show, the Tavis Smiley Show, and the Judge Hatchett Show, and has been featured in numerous magazines which include People, Ebony, Essence, Ladies Home Journal, Gospel Today, and Christian Magazine; and

Whereas, it has come to the attention of the members of the South Carolina General Assembly that Dr. King has been chosen to be the Keynote speaker for the 2006 MLK Dream Weekend Diversity Banquet on Friday, January 13, 2006, in the City of Greenville; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly would like to take this occasion to both welcome Dr. King to South Carolina and commend her for her humanitarian efforts. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, welcome Dr. Bernice A. King to the State of South Carolina on the occasion of the 2006 MLK Dream Weekend to be held in the City of Greenville, and commend Dr. King for her efforts to continue the legacy of improving the conditions of all mankind that was championed by her father, Dr. Marin Luther King, Jr., and continues to be forged by her mother, Coretta Scott King.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Dr. Bernice A. King.
