 A HOUSE RESOLUTION CONGRATULATING MARLBORO COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL ON WINNING THE
 2001 STATE FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP IN CLASS AAAA, DIVISION II, AND FOR A TRULY
 OUTSTANDING UNDEFEATED SEASON.

CONGRATULATING MARLBORO COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL ON WINNING THE 2001 STATE FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP IN CLASS AAAA, DIVISION II, AND FOR A TRULY OUTSTANDING UNDEFEATED SEASON.

Whereas, Marlboro County High School won the 2001 State Football Championship in Class AAAA, Division II, by defeating Conway High School in the title game at Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia by a score of 17-10; and

Whereas, the Bulldogs finished the 2001 campaign undefeated with a perfect record of 15-0; and

Whereas, the Associated Press ranked the Bulldogs the number one team in South Carolina high school football for 2001; and

Whereas, Rivals.Com ranked the Marlboro County High School Bulldogs the number eleven team in the United States for the 2001 football season; and

Whereas, the Bulldogs completed the regular season with a perfect record of 11-0 and defeated Fort Mill in the first round of the state playoffs by a score of 72-35, then defeated Battery Creek in the second round of the state playoffs by a score of 28-0, then defeated Dutch Fork High School for the Lower State Championship by a score of 31-7, and finally won the State Championship over Conway as mentioned above; and

Whereas, the Bulldogs brought much pride to the entire county of Marlboro by their outstanding performance on the football field and by their impeccable sportsmanship and outstanding reputation; and

Whereas, the team's individual accomplishments included having two players, Quinton Teal and Fred Townsend, selected for the 2001 Shrine Bowl Team and two players, Antoine Morgan and Ronnie "Rock" Purvis, selected for the North-South All Star Game; junior quarterback Syvelle Newton set many records and received the WPDE Zoneman Award and was named WBTW Offensive Player of the Year and Sports Report Offensive Player of the Year; and

Whereas, Head Coach and Athletics Director, Dr. Dean Boyd, set an outstanding example as a leader in the community, was selected as "Coach of the Year" for South Carolina by "The Sports Report" and was Riddell All South Coach of the Year and finished in third place in The Sporting News Coach of the Year balloting and was named Region Coach of the Year; and

Whereas, the Bulldogs demonstrated excellent talent, skill, hard work, and unity in their quest for the state football championship in 2001 and are deserving of commendation as one of the greatest high school football teams in South Carolina history. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the House of Representatives, by this resolution, congratulates Marlboro County High School on winning the 2001 State Football Championship in Class AAAA, Division II, and for a truly outstanding undefeated season.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Bulldog football team of Marlboro High School and the team's coaches.
