INVITATIONS AND MEMORIAL RESOLUTIONS
To whom was referred a Concurrent Resolution (H. 4959) to request that the Department of Transportation name the portion of University Boulevard in Horry County from its intersection with South Carolina Highway 544 to, etc., respectfully

ROBERT W. LEACH, SR. for Committee.
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
TO REQUEST THAT THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION NAME THE PORTION OF UNIVERSITY BOULEVARD IN HORRY COUNTY FROM ITS INTERSECTION WITH SOUTH CAROLINA HIGHWAY 544 TO ITS INTERSECTION WITH UNITED STATES HIGHWAY 501 THE "DR. EDWARD M. 'DICK' SINGLETON HIGHWAY" AND ERECT APPROPRIATE MARKERS OR SIGNS ALONG THIS PORTION OF HIGHWAY THAT CONTAIN THE WORDS "DR. EDWARD M. 'DICK' SINGLETON HIGHWAY".
Whereas, born in Bucksport, Dr. Edward "Dick" Singleton was educated in the Horry County schools and received bachelor and doctoral degrees from the University of South Carolina; and
Whereas, he served three years in the United States Army during Word War II; and
Whereas, Dr. Singleton was employed by the Conway public school system from 1949 to 1962, serving as a teacher, principal, and superintendent. He served as a member of the Board of Trustees of the University of South Carolina from 1952 to 1963; and
Whereas, Dr. Singleton served as Coastal Carolina University's chief administrative officer from 1963 to 1983, longer than any other leader of the institution. Under his leadership, Coastal Carolina began a period of remarkable growth and advanced from a two-year college to a four-year college and, ultimately, to an independent state university; and
Whereas, a lifelong sports enthusiast, athlete, and coach, he was the first commissioner of the Big South Conference, and was one of the first inductees into Coastal Carolina University's Athletic Hall of Fame; and
Whereas, upon his retirement from Coastal Carolina, Dr. Singleton was named Chancellor Emeritus and has continued to be a trusted advisor to the institution's administration, serving also as a director emeritus of the Coastal Educational Foundation, the university's private support component; and
Whereas, it is fitting and proper to forever recognize the tremendous contributions that Dr. Singleton has made to this nation and our State by naming a portion of University Boulevard in Horry County in his honor. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly request that the Department of Transportation name the portion of University Boulevard in Horry County from its intersection with South Carolina Highway 544 to its intersection with United States Highway 501 the "Dr. Edward M. 'Dick' Singleton Highway" and erect appropriate markers or signs along this portion of highway that contain the words "Dr. Edward M. 'Dick' Singleton Highway".
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Department of Transportation.
