A BILL

TO AMEND THE CODE OF LAWS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 1976, BY ADDING SECTION 53-3-160 SO AS TO DESIGNATE THE SEVENTEENTH DAY OF SEPTEMBER OF EACH YEAR AS "RESPECT FOR LAW DAY" AND TO REQUIRE ALL PUBLIC SCHOOLS TO ESTABLISH A PERMANENT DISPLAY THAT INCLUDES THE TEN COMMANDMENTS.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:

SECTION    1.    The 1976 Code is amended by adding:

    "Section 53-3-160.    The seventeenth day of September of each year is declared 'Respect for Law Day' and is designated as a special day to declare solemn allegiance to the principles of democracy and respect for the ideals of equality and justice under the law. As part of its observance, all public primary and secondary schools of this State must develop a Respect for Law Day curriculum focusing on the history of law and its importance in a modern democracy. All public primary and secondary schools, as part of this curriculum, must establish a permanent display that includes the Ten Commandments, the Magna Carta, the Declaration of Independence, and the United States Constitution."

SECTION    2.    This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
