 WARE SHOALS FOR HIS NEARLY FORTY YEARS OF OUTSTANDING SERVICE AS A MEMBER OF
 THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES AND AS CHAIRMAN OF THE JOINT BOND REVIEW
 COMMITTEE AND TO WISH HIM WELL IN ALL OF HIS FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND AND THANK THE HONORABLE MARION P. CARNELL OF WARE SHOALS FOR HIS NEARLY FORTY YEARS OF OUTSTANDING SERVICE AS A MEMBER OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES AND AS CHAIRMAN OF THE JOINT BOND REVIEW COMMITTEE AND TO WISH HIM WELL IN ALL OF HIS FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, Representative Marion P. Carnell will retire Thursday, June 6, 2002, as the second-longest serving House member in state history; and

Whereas, Representative Carnell has ably represented the fine citizens of Greenwood, Laurens, and Abbeville Counties who compose House District 14 since 1961; and

Whereas, Representative Carnell's colleagues in the General Assembly were deeply saddened to learn that he is not seeking reelection to the House of Representatives in 2002; and

Whereas, Marion Carnell is a native of beautiful Ware Shoals, whose substantial contributions to his community and State are immeasurable; and

Whereas, Representative Carnell is a highly successful businessman as owner of Piggly Wiggly stores in Ware Shoals and Ninety Six and is a faithful member of First Baptist Church in Ware Shoals, as well as the past President of the Ware Shoals Lion's Club and the past Commander of American Legion Post 100; and

Whereas, in recognition of his tireless public service and unwavering leadership, Marion Carnell received an Honorary Doctor of Law Degree from The Citadel in 1993, as well as Honorary Ph.D.'s from both the Medical UniversityNext of South Carolina and Lander PreviousUniversity in 1999; and

Whereas, Representative Carnell has been honored by many groups over the years for his dedication, diligence, and service to the State, receiving numerous awards that reflect his comprehensive interest in and knowledge of the various facets of South Carolina policy and programs, including Jaycee Man of the Year, American Legion Department of South Carolina Legislator of the Year, and the South Carolina Downtown Development Association Special Service Award; and

Whereas, as a member of the House of Representatives, Marion Carnell distinguished himself on numerous legislative committees, including most recently the important House Ways and Means Committee and the Interstate Cooperation Committee; and

Whereas, Representative Carnell has demonstrated outstanding service to the citizens of South Carolina through his peerless leadership as Chairman of the Joint Bond Review Committee; and

Whereas, as Chairman of the Joint Bond Review Committee, Representative Carnell presided over the authorization of an unprecedented number of capitol projects that will enhance the lives and well being of countless South Carolinians for generations to come; and

Whereas, Representative Carnell proudly served his country in the United States Navy from March 6, 1946 to January 6, 1948; and

Whereas, he is universally known, respected, and admired for his high principles and conscientiousness and as a person whose ability, intelligence, and humility have served the State so well for so many years; and

Whereas, Marion is a devoted family man with a loving wife, the former Sara Moore of Greenwood, South Carolina, and together they had two wonderful children, Marion Ray and the late Toni Lynn Carnell; and

Whereas, we take great pleasure in this opportunity to express our deepest appreciation for his four decades of loyal and selfless public service as an elected representative and sincere gratitude that we have had the honor and pleasure of serving in the General Assembly with him. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the Senate of the State of South Carolina and most especially the members of the Joint Bond Review Committee, commend and thank the Honorable Marion P. Carnell of Ware Shoals for his nearly forty years of outstanding service as a member of the House of Representatives and wish him well in all of his future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to our great friend and distinguished colleague, Marion Carnell.
