 LIFELONG COMMITMENT AND DEDICATION TO SUMTER COUNTY AND THE PALMETTO STATE.

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

HONORING MRS. RUTH JOHNSON EDENS UPON THE OCCASION OF RECENTLY BEING RECOGNIZED AS ONE OF SUMTER COUNTY'S OUTSTANDING WOMEN AND THE ADDITION OF HER NAME TO THE "2001 WOMEN'S HONOR ROLL OF SUMTER COUNTY" FOR HER LIFELONG COMMITMENT AND DEDICATION TO SUMTER COUNTY AND THE PALMETTO STATE.

Whereas, March is National Women's History Month and highlights the accomplishments of women and the need to open new doors in the future. The Sumter Volunteers, Inc., annually honors women who have gone consistently above and beyond the call of duty in giving back to Sumter County; and

Whereas, Mrs. Ruth Johnson Edens, a lifelong resident of Sumter County, was named to the "2001 Women's Honor Roll of Sumter County" on March 1, 2001, during the ninth annual rose planting ceremony; and

Whereas, Ruth Johnson Edens is married to Henry Curtis Edens, Jr., and they have four children, 11 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild; and

Whereas, Mrs. Edens has always emphasized to others the importance of an education and is a member of Sumter's UniversityNext of South Carolina Educational Foundation. She has served on the Sumter County Literacy Council and as a volunteer tutor; and

Whereas, Mrs. Edens is a member of five Sumter organizations dedicated to cultivating the arts and preserving the history of Sumter and its people. She is a published author; some of her works include books about Sumter academia and its library system; and

Whereas, Mrs. Edens continues to serve her community as a member of the Sumter County Museum Foundation and an officer of the PreviousUniversity of South Carolina Society, along with other organizations that encourage the study of arts and history; and

Whereas, an active member of Dalzell United Methodist Church, Mrs. Edens has been the organist for almost thirty years and has been an adult church school teacher. In addition, she has served as church historian on its board of trustees, on the worship committee, and on the administrative council; and

Whereas, Mrs. Ruth Johnson Edens' tireless devotion provides a positive role model and example of service for all of her peers to emulate. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, honor Mrs. Ruth Johnson Edens upon the occasion of recently being recognized as one of Sumter County's outstanding women and the addition of her name to the "2001 Women's Honor Roll of Sumter County" for her lifelong commitment and dedication to Sumter County and the Palmetto State.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mrs. Ruth Johnson Edens.
