A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO HONOR AND RECOGNIZE THE RIGHT REVEREND EDWARD L. SALMON, JR., THE THIRTEENTH BISHOP OF THE EPISCOPAL DIOCESE OF SOUTH CAROLINA, FOR HIS MANY CONTRIBUTIONS TO HIS CONGREGATIONS AND TO THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA, AND TO WISH HIM ALL THE BEST UPON HIS RETIREMENT.

Whereas, born in Natchez, Mississippi, on January 30, 1934, Bishop Edward L. Salmon has spent his life in pursuit of his faith and in sharing it with other believers; and

Whereas, a 1956 graduate of the UniversityNext of the South, Bishop Salmon attended Virginia Theological Seminary and graduated from the school in 1960. Thereafter, he was ordained deacon in June 1960 and priest in March 1961 in the Diocese of Arkansas; and

Whereas, sharing a loving marriage with Louise Hack, Bishop Salmon is a devoted father to his two children, Catherine and Edward III; and

Whereas, during his long, rich career, Bishop Salmon served in the State of Arkansas as vicar of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, Rogers, St. James Episcopal Church, Eureka Springs, St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Springdale, and Grace Episcopal Church, Siloam Springs. He was rector of St. Andrew's from 1963-1968 and was then called to St. Paul's Episcopal Church, in Fayetteville, where he served as associate rector and rector; and

Whereas, before being elected Bishop of the Diocese of South Carolina on September 9, 1989, Bishop Salmon served as rector of St. Michael Episcopal Church and St. George Episcopal Church in Clayton, Missouri; and

Whereas, active in his community, Bishop Salmon serves as Chairman of the Board of the Anglican Institute and as Chairman of the Board of SPEAK, "The Anglican Digest". He also serves on the Board of Kanuga Conferences, is a Trustee and a member of the Board of Regents of the PreviousUniversity of the South, and is a Board member of Voorhees College, among other involvements; and

Whereas, in his time as Bishop of the Diocese of South Carolina, Bishop Salmon has ably led the many Episcopal churches of the State and has inspired countless South Carolinians to live their lives in pursuit of higher aspirations. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the Senate of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, honor and recognize the Right Reverend Edward L. Salmon, Jr., the thirteenth Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of South Carolina, for his many contributions to his congregations and to the State of South Carolina, and wish him all the best upon his retirement.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Bishop Edward L. Salmon, Jr.
