A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR MAYOR JOHNNY FORD FOR HIS SERVICE TO THE CITIZENS OF TUSKEGEE, ALABAMA, AND TO WISH HIM SUCCESS AND HAPPINESS IN ALL HIS FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are pleased to pause in their deliberations to appreciate the work of Mayor Johnny Ford; and

Whereas, a native of Alabama, Johnny Ford was raised in Tuskegee, the home of the renowned Tuskegee UniversityNext, the "Pride of the Swift Growing South," and received a Bachelor of Arts in history and sociology from Knoxville College and a master's degree in public administration from Auburn PreviousUniversity at Montgomery; and

Whereas, Mayor Ford first served as mayor of Tuskegee in 1972 and remained in office until 1996. Elected as a state representative in 1998, he served on the County and Municipal Government Committee, the Lee County Legislation Committee, and the Tourism and Travel Committee; and

Whereas, he served in the Alabama House of Representatives until he was re-elected mayor of Tuskegee in September 2004; and

Whereas, Mayor Ford founded the World Conference of Mayors and is a president-emeritus and a founder of the National Conference of Black Mayors. He also chairs the National Policy Alliance, headquartered in Washington, D.C.; and

Whereas, among numerous other positions, he is a past president of the Alabama League of Municipalities, the first African American in Alabama history to be named to this statewide position; and

Whereas, the founding president of the Tuskegee Optimist Club, Mayor Ford is a member of Kappa Alpha Psi and Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church, the home church of Dr. Booker T. Washington; and

Whereas, the father of three grown children, John, Christopher, and Tiffany, Mayor Ford is married to Judge Joyce London Alexander of Boston, Massachusetts; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives acknowledge the lifetime of accomplishments of Mayor Johnny Ford and his beneficial service to the city of Tuskegee and the state of Alabama. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor Mayor Johnny Ford for his service to the citizens of Tuskegee, Alabama, and wish him success and happiness in all his future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mayor Johnny Ford.
