A CONCURRENT
RESOLUTION
EXPRESSING THE SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE
GENERAL ASSEMBLY AT THE DEATH OF ALFRED T.
("A.T.") BUTLER OF RICHLAND COUNTY AND
EXTENDING SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY
FRIENDS.
Whereas, Mr. Alfred T. ("A.T.") Butler of Richland County
died recently at the age of eighty; and
Whereas, he was active for many years in Richland County politics and
civic matters; and
Whereas, he was among the few black citizens to be elected to the
Richland County Council under the old at-large method of choosing
council members; and
Whereas, his efforts and success paved the way for other African-Americans who now hold key positions in local politics; and
Whereas, he was a graduate of Allen University, received his master's
degree in education from South Carolina State College, was the principal
of Elisha Junior High School of Newberry for seven years, was a former
executive secretary of the Palmetto Education Association, and had
served in several positions at Allen, including teaching; and
Whereas, he was a member and head steward at Bishops' Memorial
AME Church in Columbia; and
Whereas, he was an outstanding individual, a gentleman, and a person
who loved people, and he will be missed greatly by all who knew him;
and
Whereas, we, the members of the General Assembly, want his family
and his many friends to know that they are in our thoughts and have our
sincerest sympathy. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this
resolution, expresses sorrow at the death of Alfred T.
("A.T.") Butler of Richland County and extends sympathy
to his family and many friends.
