professional association, and for his many contributions to his profession and
the community.

A CONCURRENT
RESOLUTION
TO RECOGNIZE AND CONGRATULATE DR. LONNIE
RANDOLPH FOR BEING ELECTED PRESIDENT OF THE SOUTH
CAROLINA OPTOMETRIC ASSOCIATION, THE FIRST
AFRICAN-AMERICAN ELECTED PRESIDENT OF A SOUTH
CAROLINA HEALTH PROFESSIONAL ASSOCIATION, AND FOR
HIS MANY CONTRIBUTIONS TO HIS PROFESSION AND THE
COMMUNITY.
Whereas, Dr. Lonnie Randolph was recently elected President of the
South Carolina Optometric Association; and
Whereas, of the South Carolina associations representing the major
independent health care professions, the South Carolina Optometric
Association is the first to have selected an African-American as
president; and
Whereas, Dr. Randolph is a native of Columbia, South Carolina, and
graduated from Dreher High School. He received an athletic scholarship
to Benedict college and was selected captain of the college's track team;
and
Whereas, he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1972 and
then entered Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, Tennessee,
receiving a Doctor of Optometry degree in 1977 and establishing his
practice in Columbia that year; and
Whereas, Dr. Randolph has been active in his profession, serving as
President of the Midlands Optometric Society and as Chairman of the
State Association's Public Relations Committee. He is a recipient of the
South Carolina Optometric Association's Outstanding Service Award;
and
Whereas, Dr. Randolph has been extremely active in civic affairs serving
as Commissioner of the South Carolina Department of Consumer Affairs
and currently is vice president of the commission. He also has been
active in the United Black Fund of the Midlands, serving as chairman,
and has served on the Board of Advisors of the Sickle Cell Anemia
Foundation. Dr. Randolph has lectured at Benedict College and Allen
University and has served on the Board of Trustees of Greenville (SC)
Technical College; and
Whereas, in 1986, the Columbia Record selected him to receive
its "10 for the Future" award in recognition of his
leadership, talent, and significant contributions to the community. Now,
therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the General Assembly recognizes and congratulates Dr. Lonnie
Randolph for being elected President of the South Carolina Optometric
Association, first African-American elected president of a major
independent South Carolina health professional association, and for his
many contributions to his profession and the community.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Dr.
Randolph.
