A BILL

TO AMEND THE CODE OF LAWS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 1976, BY ADDING SECTION 59-29-65 SO AS TO PROVIDE THAT ALL HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS MUST SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETE A COURSE IN CARDIOPULMONARY RESUSCITATION AND THE ADMINISTRATION OF THE HEIMLICH MANEUVER AS A PREREQUISITE FOR GRADUATION FROM HIGH SCHOOL, AND TO PROVIDE THAT STUDENTS MAY RECEIVE THIS INSTRUCTION AT SCHOOL OR AT ANOTHER PUBLIC OR PRIVATE SECTOR LOCATION APPROVED BY THE LOCAL SCHOOL BOARD OF TRUSTEES.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:

SECTION 1. The 1976 Code is amended by adding:

"Section 59-29-65. All high school students must successfully complete a course in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and the administration of the Heimlich Maneuver as a prerequisite for graduation from high school. Students may receive this instruction at school or another public or private sector location approved by the local school board of trustees."

SECTION 2. This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
