A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

EXPRESSING THE SORROW AND DEEPEST SYMPATHY OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA TO THE FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS UPON THE DEATH OF ONE OF THIS STATE'S MOST PROMINENT CITIZENS, MARGARET WEEKS "TOODY" OSTEEN, CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD OF OSTEEN PUBLISHING COMPANY.

Whereas, Mrs. Margaret Weeks "Toody" Osteen of Sumter County departed this life on May 3, 1996; and

Whereas, she was born on March 26, 1908, in Pinewood, South Carolina, to the late John Wesley and Mary Cantey Broughton Weeks; and

Whereas, she was the wife of the late Hubert Duvall Osteen, Sr., who owned and managed The Item for more than sixty years; and

Whereas, at her death "Toody" Osteen was Chairman of the Board of Osteen Publishing Company; and

Whereas, she is survived by her son, Hubert Duvall Osteen, Jr., Editor and Publisher of The Item and Publisher of The Hartsville Messenger; three grandsons, Hubert Graham Osteen II and Kyle Brown Osteen of Sumter, and John Duvall Osteen of New Braunfels, Texas; and two great-grandchildren, Katherine Duvall Osteen and Hubert Graham Osteen III; and

Whereas, she is remembered by her many friends and acquaintances as a gracious, humorous, and resilient lady; and

Whereas, "Toody" Osteen will long be admired by the many people whose lives were touched by her tender, caring manner of life for all; and

Whereas, the devotion of "Toody" Osteen to her husband, Hubert, is often remembered when discussing the full life she lived; and

Whereas, even during her recent declining health she never complained or mentioned it; and

Whereas, this sweet and beautiful woman was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, a charter member of the Sumter Gallery of Art, the Sumter County Museum, and the Fine Arts Council of Sumter; and

Whereas, this dear and caring woman will be sorely missed by all whose life touched hers; and

Whereas, we want the members of her family and her many friends to know that they are in our thoughts and have our sincerest sympathy; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly express appreciation for Margaret Weeks "Toody" Osteen's life and the many contributions she gave to Sumter County and the Palmetto State. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, express their sorrow and deepest sympathy to the family and many friends upon the death of one of this state's most prominent citizens, Margaret Weeks "Toody" Osteen, Chairman of the Board of Osteen Publishing Company.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to her son, Hubert Duvall Osteen, Jr.
