A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE THE HAMMOND SCHOOL BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM FOR WINNING THE 1998-99 SOUTH CAROLINA INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS' ASSOCIATION BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP AND FOR AN OUTSTANDING SEASON DURING WHICH THEY DID NOT LOSE TO A TEAM FROM SOUTH CAROLINA.

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly are pleased to learn that the Hammond School boys basketball team won the 1998-99 South Carolina Independent Schools' Association championship by defeating a fine Pinewood Prep team and finished the season with an overall record of 23-3 and a SCISA record of 18-0; and

Whereas, Hammond finished the season with a nineteen game winning streak and did not lose a game after December, 1998. In addition, the Skyhawks did not lose to a team from South Carolina this season which makes them unique among other South Carolina teams; and

Whereas, this fine group of young men is not only one of our state's most outstanding teams but as a result of their performance in the Beach Ball Classic held at Myrtle Beach and in other tournaments is one of the nation's premier high school teams; and

Whereas, under the able leadership of head coach Jimmy Braddock and his capable staff, Hammond compiled a record during the 1998-99 season which will be difficult for future teams to beat; and

Whereas, the conduct of the Hammond players in the classroom and on and off the court this season has brought deserved credit not only upon them and their school but upon the City of Columbia and the State of South Carolina as well; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, would like to publicly recognize and congratulate the Hammond School Skyhawks boys basketball team upon its winning this truly deserved state championship. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly congratulate the Hammond School boys basketball team for winning the 1998-99 South Carolina Independent Schools' Association basketball championship and for an outstanding season during which they did not lose to a team from South Carolina.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Coach Jimmy Braddock and to Dr. Herb Barks, Headmaster of Hammond School.
