TO AMEND SECTION 59-53-50, CODE OF LAWS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 1976, RELATING TO THE POWERS AND DUTIES OF THE STATE BOARD FOR TECHNICAL AND COMPREHENSIVE EDUCATION, SO AS TO PROVIDE THAT THE BOARD SHALL ASSURE THAT AN EXTENSIVE ALLIED HEALTH CURRICULUM IS AVAILABLE IN THE TECHNICAL AND COMPREHENSIVE EDUCATION SYSTEM TO MEET NEEDS ARISING FOR HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONALS BOTH FOR TWO-YEAR DEGREE PROGRAMS AND CONTINUING EDUCATION PROGRAMS, AND TO REQUIRE AN EXISTING EMPLOYEE OF THE BOARD TO BE ASSIGNED AS A HEALTH CARE EDUCATION COORDINATOR IN ORDER TO ASSIST IN ACCOMPLISHING THE ABOVE, AND TO PROVIDE FOR THE DUTIES OF THIS COORDINATOR.
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:
SECTION 1. Section 59-53-50 of the 1976 Code is amended by adding:
"(14) assure that an extensive allied health curriculum is available in the technical and comprehensive education system to meet needs arising for health care professionals both for two-year degree programs and continuing education programs. For this purpose, there shall be assigned to an existing employee of the board the function and designation of Health Care Education Coordinator, who shall perform the following duties and responsibilities:
(a) serve as a focal point for all allied health education concerns throughout the technical and comprehensive education system;
(b) establish a review process to determine if the health care professions curriculum has kept pace with technological developments in the health care field and make available a one-page yearly fact sheet on this process;
(c) establish a continuing education program for certified nursing aides and a strategy for implementing this program that:
(i) complements existing programs or training to prepare for certification as nursing aide; and
(ii) is designed to educate to all standards for certified nursing aide or assistant."
SECTION 2. This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
