A BILL

TO AMEND SECTION 56-1-50, AS AMENDED, CODE OF LAWS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 1976, RELATING TO REQUIREMENTS TO OBTAIN A BEGINNER'S PERMIT OR A DRIVER'S LICENSE, SO AS TO PROVIDE THAT A PERSON EIGHTEEN YEARS OF AGE OR OLDER WHO IS AN AID TO FAMILIES WITH DEPENDENT CHILDREN RECIPIENT IS REQUIRED TO HAVE A BEGINNER'S PERMIT FOR THIRTY RATHER THAN NINETY DAYS BEFORE BEING ELIGIBLE FOR FULL LICENSURE.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:

SECTION 1. Section 56-1-50(F) of the 1976 Code, as added by Act 258 of 1998, is amended to read:

"(F) A person who has never held a form of license evidencing previous driving experience first must be issued a beginner's permit and must hold the permit for at least ninety days before being eligible for full licensure. However, a person who is eighteen years of age or older who is a recipient of Aid to Families with Dependent Children benefits is required to hold a beginner's permit only thirty days before being eligible for full licensure."

SECTION 2. This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
