A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND AND RECOGNIZE MRS. HARRIETT CARLOS BREVARD OF KERSHAW COUNTY, ON THE OCCASION OF HER RETIREMENT AS AN EDUCATOR AND PRINCIPAL IN THE PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM OF KERSHAW COUNTY, AND TO EXTEND BEST WISHES TO HER IN ALL OF HER FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly have learned that Mrs. Harriett Carlos Brevard is retiring from the Kershaw County School System after serving thirty years as a teacher and principal; and

Whereas, she is a native and lifelong resident of Kershaw County, who is the daughter of Mrs. Elizabeth Carlos and the late Mr. Harry Carlos; and

Whereas, Mrs. Brevard is a product of the Kershaw County Public School System, who received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education from Columbia College, her Masters of Arts degree in Elementary Education from the University of South Carolina, and her Master's Plus Thirty Hours in Education Administration from the University of South Carolina; and

Whereas, in her professional career as an educator in Kershaw County she has served as: a fourth grade teacher at Camden Elementary School; a seventh grade mathematics instructor at Camden Middle School; an Assistant Principal and Curriculum Coordinator at Camden Primary School; an Assistant Principal with Blaney Elementary School; and Principal of Jackson School; and

Whereas, she has received numerous awards in the field of education which include: Columbia College's 1977 Most Outstanding Education Major Award; the 1996 South Carolina Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development Outstanding Educational Program Award; the 1997 Child Development Collaboration Award presented by the Wateree Community Actions; and being selected as 1995 Principal of the Year for Kershaw County; and

Whereas, Mrs. Brevard was appointed by State Senator Nikki Setzler in 1990 to serve on the EIA Task Force to review programs for gifted and talented students; served as a visiting team member for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools for the past fifteen years, from 1997-1999; served as Mentor Principal for the Kershaw County Developing Administrators' Program and the South Carolina Principals' Academy; served as a Panelist on Multiage Classrooms/Curriculum at the 1998 National Multiage Conference; and served as a member of the Winter Conference Planning Committee for the South Carolina Association of School Administrators' Elementary/Middle School Division from 1998 to 2000; and

Whereas, she is a member of the: National Association of Elementary School Principals; Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development; South Carolina Chapter of the International Reading Association; South Carolina Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, where she serves as Vice President for Programs currently and will serve as President-elect for 2001-2002; South Carolina Association of School Administrators; National Education Association; South Carolina Education Association; Kershaw County Education Association; and National Association of Multiage Educators; and

Whereas, her community activities include membership with the Kershaw County Coalition on Teen Pregnancy; Alpha Delta Kappa Professional Educators Sorority, where she has served as a past President; Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.; Kershaw County Youth Leadership Academy; Kershaw County Mental Health Advisory Board; and Kershaw County Sexual Assault Center Advisory Board; and

Whereas, Mrs. Brevard is known universally, respected, and admired for her high principles and conscientiousness and as a person with tremendous ability, intelligence, a well-developed sense of humor, and always with a smile on her face; and

Whereas, she is devoted to her husband, Eddie, a general contractor, their three children, Deirdre Brevard-Smith, Marcia Wynn, and Anthony Brevard, and their four grandchildren; and

Whereas, she is an active member of the St. Paul United Methodist Church in Camden; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly take great pleasure in having this opportunity to express their deepest appreciation to Mrs. Brevard for her many years of dedicated and excellent service to the public schools of Kershaw County and to the field of public education throughout the State of South Carolina and our nation. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, highly commend and recognize Mrs. Harriett Carlos Brevard of Kershaw County for her many years of excellent service as an instructor and principal in the Kershaw County Public School System on the occasion of her retirement and extend best wishes to her in all her future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Mrs. Harriett Carlos Brevard.
