TO CONGRATULATE MRS. EMMA ANGELINE HARRIS BUTLER, ONE OF SOUTH CAROLINA'S MOST OUTSTANDING EDUCATORS AND COMMUNITY LEADERS, UPON THE OCCASION OF HER EIGHTY-EIGHTH BIRTHDAY ON JANUARY 27, 2001.
Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives are very pleased to learn that Mrs. Emma Angeline Harris Butler will celebrate her eighty-eighth birthday on January 27, 2001; and
Whereas, Mrs. Butler is the daughter of the late Sam and Alice Harris of Eastover and is one of nine children. She married Isaac B. Butler, pastor of the Daughters of Zion Baptist Church and Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, and together they raised six daughters all of whom matriculated through college with advanced degrees; and
Whereas, Mrs. Butler did her undergraduate work at Benedict College where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree, holds a Master's degree from South Carolina State University, and also did advanced post graduate work at the University of South Carolina; and
Whereas, she spent her professional life as a teacher and taught for over forty-one years at Gum Springs School and Crossroads Elementary School. As one of our state's most capable teachers, she touched the hearts and minds of the many thousands of students with whom she came into contact; and
Whereas, this truly wonderful lady has been a backbone of her community and church and is active in and provided the inspiration for Emma Butler Tents, an organization that helps to feed the hungry, cares for the sick and aged, provides scholarships for students, and helps with the needs of children and families; and
Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives, by this resolution, would like to extend their very best wishes on the occasion of her birthday to this outstanding South Carolinian who throughout her life has served as a role model for others. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the House of Representatives, by this resolution, congratulate Mrs. Emma Angeline Harris Butler, one of South Carolina's most outstanding educators and community leaders upon the occasion of her eighty-eighth birthday on January 27, 2001.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mrs. Butler.
