A BILL

TO AMEND THE CODE OF LAWS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 1976, BY ADDING SECTION 58-1-70 SO AS TO REQUIRE PUBLIC UTILITIES TO PUT A DIRECT LINE TELEPHONE NUMBER TO A CUSTOMER SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE ON ALL BILLS SENT TO RETAIL CUSTOMERS AND TO DEFINE "DIRECT LINE TELEPHONE NUMBER".

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:

SECTION 1. The 1976 Code is amended by adding:

"Section 58-1-70. (A) Telephone utilities, electric utilities, other public utilities regulated by the Public Service Commission, and electric cooperatives shall provide a direct line telephone number to a customer service representative on all bills sent to retail customers.

(B) As used in this section, a 'direct line telephone number' is a telephone number that, when dialed, connects with a customer service representative directly, without the need to go through a main menu and choose among options."

SECTION 2. This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
