A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR LUKE CHRISTIE OF DUE WEST, SOUTH CAROLINA, WHO HAS BEEN NAMED THE MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY ASSOCIATION'S 2006 NATIONAL GOODWILL AMBASSADOR AND TO WISH HIM AND HIS FAMILY ALL THE BEST AS THEY TRAVEL THE COUNTRY SPREADING THE MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY ASSOCIATION'S MESSAGE OF HOPE AND COMPASSION.

Whereas, the General Assembly is delighted to learn that Luke Christie, a very special twelve year old from Due West, South Carolina, has been named the Muscular Dystrophy Association's 2006 National Goodwill Ambassador; and

Whereas, Luke, the son of Brad and Gloria Christie and the younger brother of Parker and Spencer Christie, and his family will travel the country during 2006 representing families served by the Muscular Dystrophy Association and making public appearances, including appearing on the Association's 2006 Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon; and

Whereas, Luke, who has spinal muscular atrophy type 2, a progressive disease that causes weakness in the muscles of the arms, legs, and torso, uses a power wheelchair and doesn't miss a beat in his very active life; and

Whereas, when Luke was selected as the 2006 National Ambassador he was serving his third term as the Muscular Dystrophy Association's Goodwill Ambassador for South Carolina, and upon his selection the long time champion of this cause, Jerry Lewis, praised Luke and his family for their commitment to the Muscular Dystrophy Association and recognized Luke as the extraordinary young man that he is, stating that "Luke's charm and charisma are contagious"; and

Whereas, Luke, a straight "A" student in the 7th grade at Cherokee Trail Elementary School, whose favorite subject is English, is an avid reader, a country music fan, an active Boy Scout, an actor and director in his church and community theater, and an enthusiastic summer camper at the annual Muscular Dystrophy Association camp; and

Whereas, Luke, though realistic about the serious nature of his condition, passionately pursues his many and varied interests, and his hopes and dreams for the future abound, including following in his brothers' footsteps earning the rank of Eagle Scout, becoming a Presbyterian pastor, and pursing a career in writing as a journalist and novelist; and

Whereas, it is with great pride and admiration that the members of the South Carolina General Assembly pause in their deliberations to recognize such an exceptional and inspiring young son of South Carolina. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, recognize and honor Luke Christie of Due West, South Carolina, who has been named the Muscular Dystrophy Association's 2006 National Goodwill Ambassador and wish him and his family all the best as they travel the country spreading the Muscular Dystrophy Association's message of hope and compassion.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be provided to Luke Christie and his family.
