A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND SAMUEL EDWARD "ED" STILLWELL FOR HIS EXEMPLARY SERVICE AS AN EDUCATOR AND COMMUNITY LEADER, AND WISH HIM CONTINUED SUCCESS IN ALL HIS FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, the members of the Senate are pleased to honor Samuel Edward "Ed" Stillwell for the outstanding impact he has made on the lives of young people in the North Augusta and his significant contributions to the community; and

Whereas, Mr. Stillwell graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1939 where he was a member of the football team. He went on to receive his Masters Degree from the University of South Carolina in 1954; and

Whereas, he made his way to North Augusta in 1945, a fortuitous blessing to the community, accepting a position as principal and coach where he would remain until his retirement in 1977; and

Whereas, during his career he aptly oversaw and molded the building and development of two new high schools the first of which was built in the 1950's to accommodate the population swelling which accompanied the Savannah River Site Plant. In 1970, as the community began to grow, a new school to accommodate 1500 students was opened; and

Whereas, Mr. Stillwell acted as a peaceful facilitator to ease the transition to integration during the late 1960's and was chosen to lead a number of evaluation teams for the Southern Association of High Schools; and

Whereas, one of his proudest achievements was establishing a young adult Sunday School at Grace Methodist Church, which he led for 50 years. The class is now named in his honor; and

Whereas, as a member of the North Augusta Lions Club, he served as president and almost every other capacity from kitchen duty to ticket sales at football games. The Lions generously provided the playing field for the North Augusta football team until the early 1970's when the community built a stadium without the benefit of any governmental financing; and

Whereas, Mr. Stillwell was a quiet leader who did not seek public recognition. He preferred working in the background and providing a positive influence for youth; and

Whereas, he led while instilling Christian principles during a period when North Augusta experienced tremendous growth and unpredictable behavior as segregated schools blended into integrated schools. Mr. Stillwell looked at problems as challenges and demanded and received the utmost respect as he guided North Augusta's teenagers; and

Whereas, the members of the Senate are proud to publicly thank Mr. Stillwell for his exemplary service. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, commend Mr. Samuel Edward "Ed" Stillwell for his exemplary service as an educator and community leader, and wish him continued success in all his future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Mr. Stillwell.
