A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE THE APRIL 6, 2008, CELEBRATION OF THE FIVE-YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF THE WALHALLA CIVIC AUDITORIUM'S OFFICIAL OPENING, AND TO COMMEND THE WALHALLA CIVIC AUDITORIUM COMMITTEE FOR ITS DILIGENCE IN MAKING THE AUDITORIUM A CROWN JEWEL IN WALHALLA, OCONEE COUNTY, AND THE UPSTATE.

Whereas, the Walhalla Civic Auditorium began as the Walhalla Auditorium Restoration Committee in the early 1990's for the purpose of completely restoring the unused Walhalla High School Auditorium; and

Whereas, renovations were completed after successful fundraising events such as lawn parties, Mardi Gras celebrations, funfests, and annual Christmas tours of homes, and the Walhalla Civic Auditorium celebrated its grand opening on April 13, 2003, with a Sunday-afternoon ceremony featuring a historical talk by Reverend George Shealy; music on a restored baby grand piano; a performance by Miss South Carolina, Kelly McCorkle; and gospel music by the Zion Quartet; and

Whereas, recognized as the site of Newberry College from 1868 to 1877, the Walhalla Civic Auditorium was selected as a point along the South Carolina National Heritage Corridor; and

Whereas, traditional auditorium events include the lighting of an almost-100-year-old Deodar cedar at Christmas. The facility also operates the Secondhand Elf Room, a boon to both patrons and the auditorium; and

Whereas, the auditorium has featured a variety of entertainers over the past five years, including the Glenn Miller Orchestra, the Dillards, Andy Cooney's Forever Irish, the Golden Corner Barbershop Chorus, the Oconee Conservatory of Fine Arts, the Fantastic Shakers, Tugalo Holler, A Closer Walk With Patsy Cline, The Return Beatles Tribute Band, pianist Emile Pandolfi, and bluegrass legend Doc Watson, and the House of Representatives is pleased to commend the auditorium for its hard work in seeking to provide quality entertainment for the surrounding Walhalla community and beyond. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize the April 6, 2008, celebration of the five-year anniversary of the Walhalla Civic Auditorium's official opening, and commend the Walhalla Civic Auditorium Committee for its diligence in making the auditorium a crown jewel in Walhalla, Oconee County, and the Upstate.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Walhalla Civic Auditorium.
