A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THE BOOKMAN ROAD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT COUNCIL, OF RICHLAND COUNTY, UPON THE OCCASION OF RECEIVING THE 2008 DICK AND TUNKY RILEY SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT AWARD, AND TO COMMEND THE MEMBERS WHO CONTRIBUTED TO THIS SUCCESS.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives pause in their deliberations to congratulate the School Improvement Council of Bookman Road Elementary School for its successful efforts to improve quality education for the school's students; and

Whereas, among other accomplishments during the 2006-2007 school year, the council coordinated the support of community and local businesses for the construction of a Lighthouse Lookout Nature Trail; and

Whereas, the council also acquired and applied a two thousand three hundred dollar Palmetto Pride grant to improve the school grounds; and

Whereas, members of the council further coordinated Bookman Road's first Take Pride (in the Outside) Day, which involved over one hundred forty community volunteers; and

Whereas, created in 2002, the Dick and Tunky Riley School Improvement Award, is named in honor of former Governor and United States Secretary of Education Richard W. Riley, Jr., and his late wife, Ann Y. "Tunky" Riley, in recognition of the couple's longstanding commitment to quality education; and

Whereas, the purpose of the award is to promote and support civic engagement for quality public education, and annually it recognizes significant contributions made to public education by the more than fifteen thousand School Improvement Council members who volunteer in every public school in the State; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives applaud the Bookman Road Elementary School Improvement Council for its work on behalf of the students and congratulate the Council for receiving the Dick and Tunky Riley School Improvement Award. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor the Bookman Road Elementary School Improvement Council, of Richland County, upon the occasion of receiving the 2008 Dick and Tunky Riley School Improvement Award, and commend the members who contributed to this success.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Bookman Road Elementary School Principal Michael Guliano.
