A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THE LIFE OF GRACE YOHE STEVENS, A CHERISHED CITIZEN OF HORRY COUNTY, UPON THE OCCASION OF HER ONE HUNDREDTH BIRTHDAY, AND TO WISH HER CONTINUED HEALTH AND HAPPINESS.

Whereas, because few joys render more satisfaction than a long life filled with devotion to family, friends, and community, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly take pleasure in acknowledging the long life of Grace Stevens; and

Whereas, a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Grace Yohe was born in Monongahela, Pennsylvania, on February 24, 1910; and

Whereas, her father served in the Spanish-American War, and a family relative has served in the Armed Forces in every war since the American Revolutionary War; and

Whereas, in 1930, she married Arch Grant, and they had a son, Don. Seven years after marrying her beloved husband, he tragically drowned in Lake Erie; and

Whereas, in 1939, when she married Cotton Smith, they moved to the oil fields of Oklahoma with her young son. In 1943, they moved to Mid West City, Oklahoma, where Grace worked at Tinker Field Air Force Base packing parachutes for the war effort during World War II; and

Whereas, in 1946, they returned to Monongahela where she worked as a juvenile probation officer for many years. Cotton passed on in 1978; and

Whereas, in 1985, at the age of seventy-five, Grace married Eugene Stevens, a college professor, and they moved to San Diego County, California. When Eugene died a few years later, she returned to the hills of Pennsylvania to live with her son and daughter-in-law, Don and Peggy Grant; and

Whereas, having since moved to Myrtle Beach, the family lives together at Kingston Plantation, and Grace continues to be active in several of her varied interests; and

Whereas, although Grace is diminutive in stature, she lives a large life, marked by her winning smile and cheerful attitude and filled with passion for her country and church; and

Whereas, always active in politics, Grace served as president of the Republican Women in Monongahela and through the years has held many positions in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, including that of Sunday School teacher and youth worker; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly are grateful that the Creator has so blessed "Amazing Grace" Stevens with a long life of service to her country and church. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, recognize and honor the life of Grace Yohe Stevens, a cherished citizen of Horry County, upon the occasion of her one hundredth birthday, and wish her continued health and happiness.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Grace Stevens.
