A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO CELEBRATE THE TWENTY-FIFTH ANNIVERSARY OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA POULTRY FESTIVAL HELD IN BATESBURG-LEESVILLE, AND TO HONOR ALL THOSE PLANNING AND PARTICIPATING IN THE 2011 FESTIVAL ON MAY 12-14.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are pleased to learn that the South Carolina Poultry Festival will celebrate its twenty-fifth year at the 2011 festival in Batesburg-Leesville on May 12-14; and

Whereas, in 1986, Batesburg-Leesville restaurant owner Sara Shealy proposed the development of a poultry festival for the Lexington County community to showcase the state's largest agri-business; and

Whereas, among the state's top broiler producers, Aiken, Lexington, and Saluda counties house such well-known poultry businesses as Amick's Farms, Columbia Farms, and Gentry Poultry Company; and

Whereas, the one-billion-dollar poultry industry in South Carolina employs thousands of citizens in the production, processing, and marketing of eggs, broilers, turkeys, pigeons, quail, and spring chickens; and

Whereas, at the first festival in 1987, twenty thousand visitors participated in the events, and attendance has grown to over one hundred thousand in recent years; and

Whereas, today the festival features six stages with continuous entertainment, thirty food vendors, a carnival, a parade with well over one hundred units, numerous commercial vendors, and more than one hundred twenty crafters; and

Whereas, as the event displays the best of Southern hospitality, it also regularly contributes to various local charities, organizations, and community causes and hosts the annual state 4H cooking contest and the festival's own "Cook-Cluck-Win-A-Buck" chicken-cooking contest; and

Whereas, athletes who attend can participate in the five-kilometer road race and the golf and volleyball tournaments, and the festival concludes on Saturday evening with a spectacular display of the American spirit in one of the largest pyro-musical shows available; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives commend the planners and participants of the twenty-fifth anniversary festival and celebrate the beneficial impact of the poultry industry on the economy of South Carolina. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, celebrate the twenty-fifth anniversary of the South Carolina Poultry Festival held in Batesburg-Leesville, and honor all those planning and participating in the 2011 festival on May 12-14.
