TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR ROSE FERRARA METZ FOR HER SIGNIFICANT CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE SUMTER COMMUNITY, AND TO CONGRATULATE HER UPON BEING NAMED TO THE WOMEN'S HONOR ROLL OF SUMTER COUNTY.
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are pleased to learn that Rose Ferrara Metz was named to Sumter County's Women's Honor Roll; and
Whereas, in celebration of Women's History Month, the Sumter Volunteers, Inc., named Rose Metz as one of three inductees to the 2012 class of the Women's Honor Roll for her outstanding contributions to the Sumter community; and
Whereas, the first celebration of Women's History Week began quietly in 1977 in Sonoma County, California, as an educational project, and by 1981, the United States Congress had passed a resolution to recognize National Women's History Week; and
Whereas, as national recognition of women's contributions to history and accomplishments in American culture increased, the United States Congress expanded the celebration to a month; and
Whereas, since 1991, Sumter has observed the celebration under the auspices of the YWCA of the Upper Lowlands, and in 1993, Sumter Volunteers established The Women's Honor Roll to honor women who had made significant contributions to its history; and
Whereas, this year's class brought the total number of the Sumter honorees to ninety-nine and included Rose Metz, a prolific watercolor painter and faculty member at the Sumter County Gallery of Art school; and
Whereas, born into a first-generation Italian family in Cleveland, Ohio, she graduated from Cleveland Heights High School in 1952 and a year later married her beloved husband, and together they reared three fine children, who blessed them with six adoring grandchildren; and
Whereas, together they traveled through the United States and Europe during his career in the United States Air Force; and
Whereas, as a young child, her love of art was stirred and her artistic gifts were fostered through visits to the world-renown Cleveland Museum of Art, where she first viewed the masters and began her formal art education; and
Whereas, she studied in Texas at the Fort Worth Museum of Western Art; she pursued instruction in the medium of watercolor in Peterborough, England, and in sculpture at the Fortman Studios in Florence, Italy; and
Whereas, when her husband was transferred to Sumter in 1975, she and artist Bruce Fernandez arranged for Alex Powers of Pawleys Island to teach some workshops in Sumter, and she has been participating in his workshops for over thirty years now; and
Whereas, she studied with the University of South Carolina Sumter art department and since the late 1970s has been on the faculty of the Sumter Art Gallery school and led workshops around the State and in Virginia; and
Whereas, noted for her still life and figure studies, landscapes and florals, she has focused for the last twenty years on non-representational work, and in 2002, she was the featured artist in Watercolor Magic magazine; and
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives appreciate the work of the Sumter Volunteers, Inc., for identifying and honoring outstanding women in the community, and they are grateful for the artistic leadership and creative benefit that Rose Ferrara Metz brought to Sumter County. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor Rose Ferrara Metz for her significant contributions to the Sumter community, and congratulate her upon being named to the Women's Honor Roll of Sumter County.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be provided to Rose Ferrara Metz.
