A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THE THOMAS SUMTER ACADEMY SOFTBALL TEAM, COACHES, AND SCHOOL OFFICIALS FOR AN OUTSTANDING SEASON AND TO CONGRATULATE THEM ON WINNING THE 2014 SOUTH CAROLINA INDEPENDENT SCHOOL ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION (SCISA) CLASS AA STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE.

Whereas, fully prepared for the challenge, the Thomas Sumter Academy softball team crowned its splendid season by capturing the 2014 SCISA Class AA State Championship title, defeating Thomas Heyward Academy on May 13, 2014; and

Whereas, in the best-of-three series, the Thomas Sumter Lady Generals prevailed against the Lady Rebels and ran home with the title trophy, followed by exultant fans who were already making plans to see their team repeat the feat next year; and

Whereas, Thomas Sumter softball Head Coach Lou DeMonte, along with his assistant coaches, Katie DeMonte, Dean Morris, and B.J. Reed, put a six-year plan into place and saw it come to fruition with this title, the school's first fast pitch championship; and

Whereas, in addition to the years of finding the right combination of players and building confidence, perhaps nothing could sum up the success of the team more than two words: attitude and effort; and

Whereas, perhaps even more impressive is the way the Lady Generals brought home the hardware--and did it with no seniors. They competed against higher-level Class AA teams, as well as some Class AAA teams, in hopes of bettering themselves. Two of Thomas Sumter's losses came by one run to the now two-time defending SCISA Class AAA state champion, Wilson Hall; and

Whereas, making a sweet victory even sweeter, junior Emily DeMonte, having made a verbal commitment to Furman University, was named Region II Player of the Year, and she, Logan Morris, Josie Reed, Emily Nevels, and Jordan Morris were tapped for the SCISA North/South All-Star Game; and

Whereas, the Thomas Sumter Academy softball players have brought great pride and recognition to their school and community. Their many admirers, including the members of the General Assembly, look to hear of their continued accomplishments in the days ahead. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, recognize and honor the Thomas Sumter Academy softball team, coaches, and school officials for an outstanding season and congratulate them on winning the 2014 South Carolina Independent School Athletic Association (SCISA) Class AA State Championship title.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be provided to Head of School Debbie Nix and Head Coach Lou DeMonte of Thomas Sumter Academy.
