TO CONGRATULATE SHARON B. BROWN HARRIOTT ON HER EXCELLENT LEADERSHIP OVER THE PAST FOUR YEARS AND TO WISH HER CONTINUED SUCCESS IN ALL HER FUTURE ENDEAVORS.
Whereas, Sharon B. Brown Harriott, daughter of the late Moses and Ruby Young Brown was elected to the position of South Atlantic Regional Director of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority on April 5, 2014, in Jacksonville, Florida. She is the eighteenth person to hold the office. Mrs. Harriott now resides in Columbia, South Carolina, and is the widow of the late Mack M. Harriott; and
Whereas, Mrs. Harriott is a graduate of the University of South Carolina with a bachelor's degree in journalism and a masters of education in adult and community education and has also done post-graduate study at the University of South Carolina. In her professional life, she is a licensed counselor and, for the past thirty-one years, has worked in counseling and administrative positions directing student services programs for high school students and adults returning to education. She presently holds the position of Director for TRiO and Community Support Programs at Midlands Technical College in Columbia. Furthermore, she is also a licensed funeral director and former owner of her family business, Gibson and Brown Funeral Home in Union, South Carolina; and
Whereas, active in civic and professional organizations, Sharon was a member of the 1994 Class of Leadership Columbia and is a former president for the National Governing Board of the National Network for Women's Employment. Other affiliations include: former Regional Director of Region IV Women Work and former president of South Carolina WOMEN WORK. Additional civic activities include: former Chairman, South Carolina Department of Education Advisory Committee for Single Parent and Sex Equity Programs; former board member and vice chairman, YWCA of the Midlands; and former board member of the Columbia Alumni Association of Leadership Columbia; NAACP member; and former parliamentarian of the South Carolina Professional Association for Access and Equity; and
Whereas, Mrs. Harriott is a thirty-eight-year legacy member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., initiated in the Theta Gamma Chapter. She has also been affiliated with Gamma Nu Omega Chapter, in Columbia for thirty-six years having served as Chapter Basileus, Graduate Advisor, Epistoleus, Ivy Leaf Reporter, two terms as membership chairman, two terms as parliamentarian, and as the chapter's EAF captain. Sharon's service to AKA includes several additional leadership positions such as currently serving on the International Finance Committee and 67th Boule Consultant.
Whereas, she is a member of at Chappelle Memorial A.M.E. Church, a membership which spans some twenty years. Her commitment to the church is evidenced in her dedication of her time. She serves as Stewardess Board #2 Treasurer, in the Women's Missionary Society, former steward, and is a soloist on the Women's and Chancel Choirs; and
Whereas, Mrs. Harriott has received numerous awards and accolades. Some of these include: Midlands Technical College's Employee of the Month; The Five for the Future Award given by The Leadership Columbia Alumni Association; The Margaret Davis Bowen Outstanding Alumni Sorority member of South Atlantic Region of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.; The Yvonne Jones Cluster VII Leadership Award; The National WOMEN WORK Honor Roll of Achievement; Johnnie Ruth Clark Award for Excellence in Community and Junior Colleges Support Services; and Chappelle Memorial A.M.E. Church's 2006-07 Woman of the Year. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, congratulate Sharon B. Brown Harriott on her excellent leadership over the past four years and wish her continued success in all her future endeavors.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Mrs. Sharon B. Brown Harriott.
