A BILL

TO AMEND CHAPTER 17, TITLE 2, CODE OF LAWS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 1976, RELATING TO LOBBYISTS AND LOBBYING, BY ADDING SECTION 2-17-35 SO AS TO PROHIBIT PUBLIC OFFICIALS FROM ACCEPTING EMPLOYMENT AS A LOBBYIST IN CONNECTION WITH THE AGENCY, BOARD, PUBLIC BODY, OR OTHER POTENTIAL SUBDIVISION ON WHICH HE SERVES FOR A CERTAIN TIME PERIOD.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of South Carolina:

SECTION 1. Chapter 17, Title 2 of the 1976 Code is amended by adding:

"Section 2-17-35. For four years after a public official, as defined in Section 8-13-20, leaves an elected or appointive office or an office which was held ex-officio, he may not be employed as a lobbyist for compensation in connection with the agency, board, public body or other political subdivision on which he served.

SECTION 2. This section is effective for all public officials elected or appointed to terms of office which begin on or after November 3, 1992, and any public official who holds over an office for a term which begins on or after November 3, 1992.

SECTION 3. This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
