A BILL

TO AMEND SECTION 12-37-2740, AS AMENDED, CODE OF LAWS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 1976, RELATING TO SUSPENSION OF DRIVER'S LICENSE AND MOTOR VEHICLE REGISTRATION OF A PERSON FOR FAILURE TO PAY PROPERTY TAXES WHEN DUE, SO AS TO PROVIDE THAT, IN THE EVENT OF SUCH SUSPENSION, THE PERSON WHOSE LICENSE AND REGISTRATION ARE SUSPENDED SHALL NOT BE REQUIRED TO OBTAIN AN SR-22 IN ORDER TO HAVE THE LICENSE AND THE REGISTRATION REINSTATED.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:

SECTION 1. Section 12-37-2740 of the 1976 Code, as last amended by Act 155 of 1991, is further amended to read:

"Section 12-37-2740. The department shall suspend the driver's license and motor vehicle registration of a person violating any provision of this article only upon written notification, in a manner determined by the department, from the county treasurer or municipal clerk treasurer stating that property taxes owed by the person have not be paid within the time limit prescribed by this article. Notwithstanding any other provision of law, whenever a driver's license and motor vehicle registration are suspended for failure to pay property taxes when due, the person whose driver's license and motor vehicle registration have been so suspended shall not be required to obtain an SR-22 in order to have the license and the registration reinstated."

SECTION 2. This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
