A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

COMMENDING THE HONORABLE WILLIAM J. WHITENER FOR HIS EXEMPLARY SERVICE AS INTERIM CHANCELLOR OF THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA AT SPARTANBURG FROM 1993 THROUGH JUNE, 1994.

Whereas, William J. Whitener was appointed by Governor Riley to serve as a member of the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education from 1985 to 1993 and served as commission chairman for four years; and

Whereas, in 1988 he was named by Governor Campbell to the South Carolina Commission on the Future and to the Governor's Educational Remediation Initiatives Committee; and

Whereas, before his appointment to the Higher Education Commission, Mr. Whitener had served for seven years as dean of the University of South Carolina's Union campus -- a position he accepted after retiring from a military career spanning twenty-nine years; and

Whereas, in 1993, he accepted an appointment to become the interim chancellor of the University of South Carolina at Spartanburg, and he has served with distinction in that post since September of 1993 when he filled it; and

Whereas, his duties as interim chancellor at USC Spartanburg will expire in June, 1994; and

Whereas, he has done a superb job in this office and is clearly dedicated to excellence in higher education in South Carolina; and

Whereas, the citizens of the Palmetto State appreciate his outstanding public service rendered over the years and particularly the great job he has done as interim chancellor at USC Spartanburg. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, commends the Honorable William J. Whitener for his exemplary service as interim chancellor of the University of South Carolina at Spartanburg from 1993 through June, 1994.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Dr. C. Guillary at USC Spartanburg for presentations, on behalf of the General Assembly, to the Honorable William J. Whitener.
