A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE THE OUTSTANDING CAREER AND THE LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT OF DR. JACK A. POWERS AND TO CONVEY THE BEST WISHES OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA SENATE ON THE OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT AS PRESIDENT OF SPARTANBURG TECHNICAL COLLEGE.

Whereas, Jack Powers began his journey along the road of education at Mars Hill College in 1953; and

Whereas, Dr. Powers completed his undergraduate studies and proudly received a Baccalaureate degree in History and English from Furman University in 1957; and

Whereas, he returned to the familiar grounds of Furman University in 1963 to continue his pursuit of excellence in his chosen field and received his Masters Degree in Education in 1966; and

Whereas, Dr. powers had the capstone placed on his academic career in 1977 when the University of South Carolina conferred upon him a Doctorate Degree in Education; and

Whereas, Jack Powers' professional and academic experiences prepared him well for the challenges which were to come as a high school teacher, as an adjunct professor at the University of South Carolina, as the Dean of Instruction and Continuing Education at Midlands Technical College, as an Associate Director for the State Board for Technical Education and finally as President of Spartanburg Technical College; and

Whereas, he has also been active in community affairs as a board member of the Spartanburg area Chamber of Commerce, the Spartanburg Boys' Home, the United Way of the Piedmont and Junior Achievement and, as well, has served as an active and valuable member of numerous other civic and community organizations and efforts; and

Whereas, Dr. Powers has been recognized for his innovation and dedicated service by numerous government, business and professional organizations, literally too many times to mention each one individually; and

Whereas, he received the crowning honor in any professional field by being chosen by his peers as President of the Technical College President's Council in 1992 and the prestigious position of President of the South Carolina Association of Colleges and Universities in 1995; and

Whereas, Spartanburg County is proud and grateful to have shared in the career successes and remarkable life achievements of Dr. Jack A. Powers. Now, Therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, does recognize and commend Dr. Jack A. Powers for his outstanding career in education and his life achievements as a dedicated and exemplary educator and offers its heartfelt best wishes and congratulations on the occasion of his retirement as President of Spartanburg Technical College.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Dr. Powers.
