A BILL

TO AMEND THE CODE OF LAWS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 1976, BY ADDING SECTION 56-5-755 SO AS TO PROVIDE THAT A MOTOR VEHICLE OPERATOR WHO FAILS TO STOP HIS MOTOR VEHICLE WHEN SIGNALED BY A LAW ENFORCEMENT VEHICLE AND IS APPREHENDED AFTER A LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER PURSUES HIM MORE THAN ONE-HALF MILE AT A SPEED IN EXCESS OF SIXTY MILES AN HOUR IS GUILTY OF A FELONY, AND TO PROVIDE PENALTIES.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:

SECTION 1. The 1976 Code is amended by adding:

"Section 56-5-755. A motor vehicle operator who violates Section 56-5-750 and who is apprehended after a law enforcement officer pursues his motor vehicle more than one-half mile at a speed in excess of sixty miles an hour is guilty of a felony and, upon conviction, must be imprisoned not more than five years."

SECTION 2. This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
