A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

SALUTING BOBBY RUTLAND OF AIKEN COUNTY FOR HIS COMMITMENT TO IMPROVING AND DEVELOPING THE USE OF, AND ACTIVITIES SURROUNDING, LANGLEY POND IN AIKEN COUNTY AS A TRAINING SITE FOR THE 1996 OLYMPIC ROWING TEAMS, AND RECOGNIZING MR. RUTLAND AS A "SOUTH CAROLINA STAR".

Whereas, Bobby Rutland, a distinguished citizen of Aiken County and an outstanding South Carolinian, attended Langley-Bath-Clearwater High School and went to work for the Graniteville Company as a mechanic; and

Whereas, he later attended Aiken Tech in sheet metal layout, studied art at the Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art, and studied voice and organ privately; and

Whereas, he went to work at Clearwater Finishing in the sheet metal shop, was self-employed at Ceramic Crafts, a ceramics shop, was self-employed as Rutland Home Improvements, and is now retired because of his health; and

Whereas, Mr. Rutland is a member of Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church and is a member of the church choir; and

Whereas, he is past chairman of the Aiken County Chapter of Carolina Alliance for Fair Employment and serves as chairman of the Aiken County Advisory Committee on Langley Pond; and

Whereas, he is chairman of Langley Pond Development for Public Use Subcommittee (Midland Valley Vision 2004 Committee); and

Whereas, his hobbies include art and singing and the development of Langley Pond; and

Whereas, he is the Honorary Mayor of Langley Pond; and

Whereas, he has given most generously of his time, talent, and energy in the development and use of Langley Pond, which is a training site for the rowing teams in the 1996 Summer Olympic Games; and

Whereas, his efforts are assisting international athletes in preparation for the 1996 Olympics in the sport of rowing, and he has been especially helpful in installing the lines on the pond for the rowing lanes; and

Whereas, Bobby Rutland is a generous and caring man, and his efforts with respect to Langley Pond have earned him the status of a "South Carolina Star". Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, salutes Bobby Rutland of Aiken County for his commitment to improving and developing the use of, and activities surrounding, Langley Pond in Aiken County as a training site for the 1996 Olympic rowing teams and recognizes Mr. Rutland as a "South Carolina Star".

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. Bobby Rutland.
