CONGRATULATING ST. JOHN UNITED METHODIST CHURCH OF GRANITEVILLE ON ITS ONE HUNDRED FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY.
Whereas, soon after Graniteville Company was founded in Aiken County in 1845, William Gregg commissioned an English architect to design a church in the Gothic style, patterned after Westminster Abbey in London, to serve the people of the Town of Graniteville; and
Whereas, this was the beginning of St. John United Methodist Church in 1846; and
Whereas, over the years, St. John has been the mother church to at least six separate congregations in the area; the sanctuary of St. John stands as a symbol of the faithful work of dedicated Christian men and women concerned for God's work on earth and His people; and
Whereas, St. John has a proud and lively heritage, and in 1979, the church was listed on the National Register of Historic Places; and
Whereas, St. John's one hundred fiftieth anniversary, which the church's members and many friends are celebrating this year, is an occasion for great joy and reflection and is highly deserving of special recognition. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, congratulates St. John United Methodist Church of Graniteville on its one hundred fiftieth anniversary.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to St. John United Methodist Church at Graniteville.
