A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE MR. WILLIE M. MCLAUGHLIN FOR BEING ELECTED AS THE FIRST AFRICAN-AMERICAN SOUTH CAROLINA DEPARTMENT COMMANDER OF THE AMERICAN LEGION AND TO EXTEND BEST WISHES FOR MUCH CONTINUED SUCCESS IN HIS FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, Mr. Willie M. McLaughlin successfully campaigned and became the first African-American South Carolina Department Commander of the American Legion for 1994-1995; and

Whereas, he graduated from Friendship High School of Rock Hill; and

Whereas, Mr. McLaughlin earned a Bachelor of Science degree in agricultural engineering and a Master of Science degree in education from South Carolina State University; and

Whereas, he is devotedly married to the former Flora Louise Graves of Dillon, and they have one daughter and one son; and

Whereas, Mr. McLaughlin dutifully served his country as a member of the United States Army from 1946 to 1951, including ten months in Korea with the United States Eighth Army; and

Whereas, he is a well-respected and admired retired educator in his community; and

Whereas, Mr. McLaughlin is the recipient of a Teacher of the Year Award and a Distinguished Service Award; and

Whereas, he has served in a variety of distinguished positions such as Secretary-Treasurer of the South Carolina Agriculture Teachers and President of the Greenwood County Education Association of South Carolina; and

Whereas, Mr. McLaughlin is committed to using his leadership abilities to assist the veterans of South Carolina. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly congratulate Mr. Willie M. McLaughlin on his election as the first African-American South Carolina Department Commander of the American Legion and wish him much success in his future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. Willie M. McLaughlin.
