A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND CONGRATULATE THE LANCASTER AND CHESTER RAILWAY COMPANY ON THE OCCASION OF ITS ONE HUNDREDTH ANNIVERSARY AND TO EXPRESS THE APPRECIATION OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY TO THE SHAREHOLDERS OF THIS COMPANY WHO HAVE MADE THIS WONDERFUL ASSET AVAILABLE TO THE CITIZENS OF LANCASTER AND CHESTER COUNTIES.

Whereas, on June 17, 1896, the Lancaster and Chester Railway Company was chartered by the State of South Carolina and officially purchased at public auction in Chester County on June 19, 1896, by Leroy Springs; and

Whereas, this railway has been maintained by the Springs family and the other descendants of the original shareholders since its inception for the benefit of the citizens of Lancaster and Chester Counties; and

Whereas, its twenty-nine-mile route between Lancaster and Chester has been of substantial economic benefit to the communities it serves and also is now a part of the heritage and history of the area in which it is located; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, would like to publicly recognize the Lancaster and Chester Railway Company on the occasion of its upcoming one hundredth anniversary on June 17, 1996, and thank the Springs family and all those who have made this historic and unique endeavor available to the citizens of this State who have been privileged to use this railway. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly hereby recognize and congratulate the Lancaster and Chester Railway Company on the occasion of its one hundredth anniversary and to express the appreciation of the General Assembly to the shareholders of this company who have made this wonderful asset available to the citizens of Lancaster and Chester Counties.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Lancaster and Chester Railway Company.
