A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS THE DEEPEST SYMPATHY OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY TO THE FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS OF ONE OF THIS STATE'S MOST PROMINENT NEWSPAPER EDITORS, JAMES A. BROWN OF ANDERSON, WHO PASSED AWAY THURSDAY, APRIL 27, 1995.

Whereas, Mr. James A. Brown of Anderson passed away Thursday, April 27, 1995, at the Anderson Area Medical Center; and

Whereas, Mr. Brown is survived by his wife, Mary Earle Brown; his sister, Mrs. James King of Royston, Georgia; his two daughters, Mary Earle McCraw of Newport Beach, California and Anne Wilson of Rome, Georgia; four grandsons; and one great-granddaughter; and

Whereas, born in Royston, Georgia, Mr. Brown was graduated from Royston High School, attended the Georgia School of Technology, and was graduated from the University of Georgia in 1933, with a BS Degree in Journalism; and

Whereas, Mr. Brown worked on the staffs of the Augusta, Ga., Herald, the Staunton, Va., Leader papers, Newport News, Va., Daily Press and Times Herald, the Spartanburg Herald, and the Asheville Citizen and Times; and

Whereas, arriving in Anderson in 1947, Mr. Brown joined the Daily Mail staff as wire editor, and in 1952, Mr. Brown was named the managing editor of Anderson' finest afternoon publication; and

Whereas, Mr. Brown became editor upon the retirement of the late J.B. Hall and worked with the Daily Mail until its merger with The Independent, one of Anderson's finest publications; and

Whereas, Mr. Brown worked in the newspaper business until retiring April 9, 1984, exactly fifty years to the day he began working in the newspaper business; and

Whereas, Mr. Brown was also a member of the founding group of The Brighter Christmas Fund, a member of the original board of directors of the Meals on Wheels program, and was a volunteer at the Anderson Free Clinic; and

Whereas, Mr. Brown was an active member of St. John's United Methodist Church where he served on the Board of Stewards as a trustee and where he served as the superintendent of the Youth Division of Sunday School; and

Whereas, Mr. Brown is an honorary life member of the Board of Stewards for St. John's United Methodist Church. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly express their deepest sympathy to the family and many friends of Mr. James A. Brown of Anderson who passed away Thursday, April 27, 1995.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the family of Mr. Brown.
