A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THE STAR NEWSPAPER AS AN EXEMPLARY FAMILY BUSINESS AND ITS OWNERS, SAM AND MIM WOODRING, AND TO CONGRATULATE THEM FOR THEIR ACHIEVEMENTS IN THE AREAS OF COMMUNITY JOURNALISM, COMMUNITY SERVICE, AND COMMUNITY OUTREACH.

Whereas, The Star was established in 1954 by three men as a newspaper of general distribution in North Augusta, South Carolina; and

Whereas, after only one month of production, the paper folded; and

Whereas, Sam and Mim Woodring purchased and took over The Star on September 2, 1954; and

Whereas, The Star was the first commercially produced photo offset newspaper in South Carolina; and

Whereas, The Star has continued as a successful locally-owned business for nearly forty-four years; and

Whereas, The Star has been an active member of the South Carolina Press Association for nearly forty-four years, and over the years has won state press association awards for features, editorials, general excellence, advertising, and community service; and

Whereas, in 1959, Sam Woodring won the South Carolina Community Service Award for his two-year fight to abolish secret meetings of the North Augusta City Council; and

Whereas, in 1961, Sam Woodring was named winner of the Elijah Parish Lovejoy Award for Courage in Journalism for his heroic and unpopular stance on changes in the North Augusta Police Department; and

Whereas, in 1966, Mim Woodring was named Newspaper Woman of the Year by the South Carolina Press Association and became the first woman elected to serve on the South Carolina Press Association's board of directors; and

Whereas, Mim Woodring in her interest to serve Aiken County dedicated twelve years of her life as an Aiken County councilwoman; and

Whereas, Sam in 1976 and Mim in 1988 were honored with Service to Mankind awards presented by the North Augusta Sertoma Club; and

Whereas, North Augusta is truly a better place because of Sam and Mim Woodring's decision some forty-seven years ago to make North Augusta their home; and

Whereas, The Star continues to play a vital role in the economic life of the North Augusta community and provides a specifically targeted market for small businesses in North Augusta; and

Whereas, Sam and Mim Woodring's accomplishments within the North Augusta community always indicated a strong commitment to the North Augusta High School, the library, the Department of Social Services, and almost any endeavor in which young North Augustan's were involved; and

Whereas, the North Augusta community recognizes the years of devotion Sam and Mim have always shown to each other. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize and honor The Star newspaper as an exemplary family business and its owners Sam and Mim Woodring for their achievements not only in the area of community journalism but also in their commitment to the community. Sam and Mim are shining examples of those who believe giving back to a community is a part of our responsibility as citizens.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. and Mrs. Sam Woodring.
