A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA SENATE UPON THE DEATH OF MR. LLOYD EDWARD KIRKLAND, SR. OF WEST COLUMBIA, AND TO EXTEND DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.

Whereas, the members of the Senate were deeply saddened to learn of the death of Mr. Lloyd Edward Kirkland, Sr. of West Columbia, who died on May 31, 1998; and

Whereas, Mr. Kirkland was born in Wagener, the son of the late Henry Stancel Kirkland and Lizzie Starnes Kirkland, and was a lifelong resident of West Columbia. Mr. Kirkland worked for the Mount Vernon Textile Mills from 1933 to 1943, and was an agent and staff manager for the Atlantic Coast Life Insurance Company until 1950. He was founder and proprietor of Kirkland Mercantile Company from 1954 until his death; and

Whereas, Mr. Kirkland served his state and nation as a member of the South Carolina National Guard, Old Hickory Division, Company H, during World War II. Mr. Kirkland was a highly respected citizen who faithfully served his community as a City Councilman for West Columbia for eighteen years; and

Whereas, Mr. Kirkland was a charter member of the West Side Baptist Church and served as a deacon, usher, and trustee since 1944. He was a member of the Sinclair Masonic Lodge No. 154, the Alston Wilkes Society, and the Mid-Carolina Mental Health Association; and

Whereas, Mr. Kirkland was a devoted husband and father, and is survived by his wife, Helen Camp Kirkland; his brother, Wilbur Eugene Kirkland of West Columbia; children, Annette Kirkland Parnell of West Columbia, Stancel E. Kirkland of West Columbia, Daniel K. Kirkland of Irmo, Kay Kirkland Gunter of Boyce, Virginia, L. Edward Kirkland, Jr. of Columbia, and Rhonda Kirkland Huntley of West Columbia; fifteen grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Mary Alice Craft Kirkland and children, Cynthia Mae Kirkland and the Reverend Dean Proctor of Statesville, North Carolina, and the members of the Senate hereby express their deepest sympathy to his widow, his children, family and friends upon the death of this truly fine gentleman. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate hereby express their deepest sympathy to the family of Mr. Lloyd Edward Kirkland, Sr. of West Columbia, who died on May 31, 1998.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to his widow, Mrs. Helen Camp Kirkland, of West Columbia.
