A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

RECOGNIZING AND COMMENDING DR. THOMAS MARION DAVIS OF CLARENDON COUNTY, A LEGENDARY FIGURE IN MEDICINE IN THE PEE DEE, FOR HIS MANY YEARS OF DEDICATION TO THE MEDICAL PROFESSION AND THE GOOD PEOPLE OF THE PALMETTO STATE.

Whereas, born in Branchville, Dr. Thomas Marion Davis graduated from the University of South Carolina, with a Bachelor of Science Degree in biology in 1940 and from the Medical University of South Carolina in 1943; and

Whereas, he served his country in the United States Navy in World War II and later, beginning in the early 1950s, became a resident surgeon in Manning; and

Whereas, he was the chief surgeon for Clarendon Memorial Hospital and served in that capacity for many years; he retired in 1997 from the active practice of surgery; upon his retirement, the staff of the hospital conferred upon him the status of "Courtesy Staff Member for Life"; and

Whereas, Dr. Davis became a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons in 1953; he has been a member of the Sumter, Clarendon, and Lee Medical Society, the South Carolina Medical Society, and the American Medical Society. He served as secretary of the Seventh Medical District Society for thirty years; he has also been a member of the Society of Abdominal Surgeons, a member of the courtesy surgical staff at Tuomey Hospital in Sumter, and a member of the South Eastern Surgical Congress; and

Whereas, Dr. Davis is one of the best known and most revered surgeons in South Carolina; the people of the Pee Dee admire him and love him dearly; he was the first surgeon at Clarendon Memorial Hospital and is a legend in medicine in the Pee Dee; and

Whereas, his portrait has been commissioned and will be hung at the hospital a great honor and distinction; and

Whereas, we wish to take special note of this remarkable human being and superb surgeon. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognizes and commends Dr. Thomas Marion Davis of Clarendon County, a legendary figure in medicine in the Pee Dee, for his many years of dedication to the medical profession and the good people of the Palmetto State.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Dr. Thomas Marion Davis and to Edward Frye, Administrator of Clarendon Memorial Hospital, the Clarendon Memorial Hospital Board of Trustees, the Clarendon County Archives, and Mr. Charles Hester, retired Assistant Administrator of Clarendon Memorial Hospital.
