CONGRATULATING THE FORENSICS TEAM OF SOUTHSIDE HIGH SCHOOL OF GREENVILLE COUNTY ON BECOMING THE 1997 SOUTH CAROLINA STATE SPEECH AND DEBATE CHAMPIONS.

Whereas, the Forensics Team of Southside High School of Greenville County became the 1997 South Carolina State Speech and Debate Champions at a competition held in Charleston on March 3-4, 1997; and

Whereas, the Southside High School Forensics Team has approximately one hundred thirty active members who compete in four different debate categories; at the state championship tournament March 3-4, the team won two state championship awards -- "AAA Division Champions" and the "Overall State Sweepstakes Award"; and

Whereas, the team was state champs in the AA Division in 1991 and 1992; and

Whereas, the team was founded in 1989 by Program Director/Coach, Mr. Truman Humbert, for the purpose of training young people in public speaking, oratory, debate, and leadership; in 1996, Mrs. Annellen Hughes became an additional coach; the team is supported by the Southside High School Booster Club, parents, staff, alumni, churches, fraternities, sororities, businesses, and the School District of Greenville County; and

Whereas, the Southside High School Forensics Team has won many other awards and honors and produces annually some of the best young debaters, speakers, and leaders to be found anywhere; and

Whereas, we are delighted to have the opportunity to recognize such an outstanding group of young people. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, congratulates the Forensics Team of Southside High School of Greenville County on becoming the 1997 South Carolina State Speech and Debate Champions.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Southside High School Forensics Team.
