A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE DR. MAMIE B. DUPREE OF SUMTER COUNTY, PRINCIPAL OF LAMAR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, ON HER SELECTION AS A WOMAN OF ACHIEVEMENT FOR 1998 BY THE GOVERNOR'S OFFICE COMMISSION ON WOMEN IN APPRECIATION FOR HER EXEMPLARY SERVICE TO PUBLIC EDUCATION IN SOUTH CAROLINA.

Whereas, Dr. Mamie B. DuPree is a life-long resident of South Carolina, a resident of Sumter County, and the principal of Lamar Elementary School; and

Whereas, she has served as principal there since 1994 and before that as principal of Spaulding Elementary School in Lamar for five years; and

Whereas, Dr. DuPree has been an important player in public education in South Carolina since her graduation from Morris College in 1969, having earned certification and served in the classroom, as a guidance counselor, assistant principal, and principal, and as President of the Florence Chapter of Phi Delta Kappa international professional fraternity for men and women in education; and

Whereas, in the intervening years, she has earned the Master's Degree in secondary school guidance from the University of South Carolina and the Doctorate Degree in educational administration from South Carolina State University; and

Whereas, during her distinguished tenure in public education, Dr. DuPree has shared her love and enthusiasm for learning with countless teachers, parents, and children; and

Whereas, her efforts have been an example and inspiration to the young women of South Carolina to set their goals higher and to share their special gifts with family, community, and state; and

Whereas, her commitment and dedication to excellence through educational achievement challenge other South Carolina women to overcome the kinds of obstacles her students at Lamar Elementary have surmounted--winning the State Department of Education's Incentive Award, the Exemplary Writing School Award, and the Department of Health and Environmental Control recognition as the best school in the State for teaching recycling--all in the context of an economically depressed environment where eighty-eight percent of the schools's students live at the poverty level; and

Whereas, Dr. DuPree gives her students not only an urge for success, but also hugs, discipline, compassion, and vision; and

Whereas, her contributions and devotion to her students and this State have resulted in her selection as one of only six recipients of the 1998 South Carolina Woman of Achievement Award from the Governor's Office Commission on Women. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That members of the General Assembly congratulate Dr. Mamie B. Dupree of Sumter County, Principal of Lamar Elementary School, on her selection as a Woman of Achievement for 1998 by the Governor's Office Commission on Women in appreciation for her exemplary service to public education in South Carolina.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Dr. DuPree.
