A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND THE LUGOFF-ELGIN HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING TEAM, AND ITS COACHES, TRAINERS, AND STAFF, FOR WINNING THE 1998 STATE CLASS AAA WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIP.

Whereas, the 1998 Lugoff-Elgin High School Wrestling Team under the leadership and guidance of Head Coach Tim Wash, assistant coaches Joe Carron, Andrew Heddy, and Steven Flynn, trainers Jill Drees and Andie Stewart, and team physician Dr. Hank Hulteen won the 1998 State Class AAA Wrestling Championship; and

Whereas, the Lugoff-Elgin Demons accomplished this outstanding achievement for the second year in a row having captured the State Class AAA Wrestling title for 1997. Back-to-back crowns is an achievement seldom accomplished in any sport; and

Whereas, the 1998 Lugoff-Elgin Wrestling Team compiled a 21-2 won-loss record and continued its unbeaten and perfect record at home and in all Class AAA competition since 1995; and

Whereas, the Demons were the first team in the history of the prestigious Rock Hill Wrestling tournament to win the tournament other than Rock Hill High School; and

Whereas, the team outscored its opponents during the playoffs and championship matches by a cumulative score of 223 to 54; and

Whereas, the Lugoff-Elgin Wresting Team set a state record in defeating Lower Richland High School 84-0, defeated a talented Fort Mill High School team in the state finals 48-12, and includes four state champions, Jeff Pearson, Ben Connell, Daniel Norris, and Justin Gainey, who was also selected "Most Outstanding Wrestler" in the State; and

Whereas, the members of the 1998 team are Doug Gainey, James Parker, Ryan McClester, Justin Gainey, Neil Flowers, Gene Matherly, Daniel Huffman, Corey Mursuli, Jeff Courson, Chris Angel, Shaun Hanly, Jason Parker, Brian Kirsch, Terrence Frechette, Peter Hemingway, Jason Charles, Derek Hall, Tony Vincent, Ray Keitt, Matt Shields, Jeff Pearson, Marcus Bryant, Danny Beville, Matt Baker, Jerry Strickland, Boykin Gaskins, Jared McManus, Chris McDonald, Ben Connell, Daniel Norris, and Todd Heddy; and

Whereas, additional honors earned by the Lugoff-Elgin team include:

(1) Justin Gainey being named to the State All-Star Team, serving as a team co-captain, and being ranked number sixteen in the United States as he was not scored upon by any of his 103 State Class AAA opponents;

(2) Jeff Courson won the Lower State Championship, was State Runner-up, and was named the team's "Most Improved" wrestler;

(3) Chris Angel served as a team co-captain, was named to the State All-Stars Wrestling Team, and received the "Coaches Dedication" award;

(4) Terrence Frechette was a team co-captain and chosen recipient for the State All-Stars Team Leadership award;

(5) Jeff Pearson was a team co-captain and named to the State All-Star team;

(6) Matt Baker who won the lower state championship;

(7) Ben Connell who was ranked third nationally in his class;

(8) Daniel Norris who was a team co-captain and named to the State All-Star team; and

(9) Coach Tim Wash being named State Coach of the Year; and

Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives, by this resolution, would like to publicly recognize and congratulate this truly talented group of young men for their collective and individual awards and outstanding records of accomplishment and extend to each of the team members, coaches, trainers, and team doctor best wishes for much continued success in all their future endeavors. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives hereby commend the Lugoff-Elgin High School Wrestling Team, its coaches, trainers, and staff for winning the 1998 State Class AAA Wrestling Championship.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the Lugoff Elgin High School Wresting Team.
