Whereas, Greenwood County will celebrate its one hundredth anniversary on June 3, 1997, a period that has seen remarkable changes not only in structures but also in her people; and

Whereas, Greenwood County's enlightened and committed leadership saw her through the depression years as these individuals strove to grow in industrial strength at a critical time that helped Greenwood through those rough years; and

Whereas, Greenwood County's established institutions have grown and changed over time to bring an influx of recent industrialization that has changed forever the population of the County, just as its first industry brought new families to the area; and

Whereas, Greenwood County can be proud of its place in science frontiers and especially in the area of genetic research where some of the basic knowledge of human genetics will be gained at research facilities in Greenwood County which will help fight the many health problems faced in the world; and

Whereas, Greenwood County's institutions of higher learning were calculated and significant dreams for Greenwood's future in the minds of its early planners and these institutions have played a key role in Greenwood County's history; and

Whereas, Greenwood County, stretching from Ware Shoals to Troy and Ninety-Six and all communities in-between, large and small, have developed an interdependence over time from increased innovation in technology which pushed the communities closer together and drove the interaction of farmer with factory worker and service provider and created a true feeling of community throughout the County; and

Whereas, Greenwood County would not be Greenwood County without its collective memories of her people which instills great pride in all the accomplishments, great or small, of her residents; and

Whereas, the Greenwood County Centennial Commission is to be congratulated for their hard work in making the centennial celebration a grand affair for all the citizens of Greenwood County to take time to reflect on what makes Greenwood County a great place to call home. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:
