A HOUSE RESOLUTION

CONGRATULATING THE MENTAL HEALTH ASSOCIATION IN SOUTH CAROLINA ON ITS FORTY-FIFTH BIRTHDAY.

Whereas, for forty-five years the Mental Health Association in South Carolina (MHASC) has worked for South Carolinians in need; and

Whereas, MHASC hosted the 1965 Governor's Leadership Conference on Mental Health, starting a wave of building of community mental health centers across the Palmetto State; MHASC helped start the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill and South Carolina S.H.A.R.E. in the 1980's - fellow advocacy groups for families and consumers; and MHASC began actively advocating for the mental health needs of children; and

Whereas, MHASC started Operation Santa Claus, providing gifts and cheer to patients at state facilities during the holidays; MHASC also helped bring state treatment facilities into compliance with mandates of the United States Department of Justice and began building community-based housing for persons recovering from mental illness, resulting in more than 260 units of housing for the mentally ill to the present date; and

Whereas, MHASC has for decades been an advocate for all people with mental illness and has worked to eliminate the stigma of mental illness; MHASC is truly the birthplace of mental health advocacy in South Carolina, and we are pleased to be able to recognize this exemplary organization in this special manner. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, congratulates the Mental Health Association in South Carolina on its forty-fifth birthday.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Mental Health Association in South Carolina, in care of Mr. Douglas Davisson, MHASC Vice President for Development.
