EXPRESSING THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES UPON THE DEATH OF DR. CHARLES EDWARD MURRAY OF WILLIAMSBURG COUNTY AND EXTENDING DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.

Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives were saddened to learn of the death of Dr. Charles Edward Murray of Williamsburg County, who died on August 19, 1999; and

Whereas, Dr. Murray was the son of the late William and Mariah Parker Murray; and

Whereas, he left home at an early age to attend South Carolina State College where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and pursued his graduate studies at Atlanta University and the University of Pennsylvania; and

Whereas, Dr. Murray served his country with honor and distinction during World War II as a member of the United States Army; and

Whereas, he devoted almost fifty years of his life to the field of public education in Williamsburg County, including teaching English at Tomlinson High School and service as Principal of Williamsburg County Training School which was renamed C. E. Murray High School in 1972 in his honor; and

Whereas, Dr. Murray received many honors and awards throughout his life, which included an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree from Claflin College in 1979, having a street in the Town of Greeleyville named in is honor in 1993, and being awarded the Silver Beaver Award by the Boy Scouts of America; and

Whereas, he was a longtime member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church where he served as Church Lay Leader for twenty-eight years, President of the United Methodist Men for thirty years, taught the Men's Bible Class for twenty-five years, served as Director of the Senior Choir and Coordinator of Music, was a member of the Board of Trustees and Finance Committee, and served on several statewide committees of the United Methodist Church; and

Whereas, Dr. Murray was a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, the Executive Committees of the South Carolina Mental Retardation Commission, and the Tara Hall School for Boys. He was a founder of the American Legion Post 220 in the Town of Kingstree and served as Adjutant and served as Director of the Head Start Program for Williamsburg and Lee Counties for three summers in the late 1960's; and

Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives want the family and many friends of Dr. Charles Edward Murray to know that they are uppermost in their thoughts and have the members' deepest sympathy. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, express profound sorrow upon the death of Dr. Charles Edward Murray of Williamsburg County and extend deepest sympathy to his family and many friends.

Be it further resolved that copies of this resolution be forwarded to Williamsburg County Public School Superintendent, Kenneth Gardner, and members of the Williamsburg County School Board, which include the Honorable Jerry L. Dicks, Chairman; the Honorable James H. Darby, Vice Chairman; the Honorable Julia B. McFadden, Secretary; the Honorable Norman Gamble; the Honorable Joshua Gaskins; the Honorable William C. Henryhand, Sr.; the Honorable Joseph M. Lee; the Honorable Lucille B. Scott; and the Honorable William J. Todd; C. E. Murray High School Principal, Mr. Glen Kennedy; the Mt. Zion Baptist Church of Greeleyville; the Honorable Isaac Holmes, Mayor of the Town of Greeleyville; the members of the Greeleyville Town Council, which include the Honorable Debra Keels, the Honorable Jesse Parker, the Honorable Otis Murray, and the Honorable Judy Gray; and also the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church of Kingstree.
