A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS THE DEEPEST SYMPATHY OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY TO THE FAMILY OF MR. D. L. WICKER, SR., OF CAYCE, UPON HIS DEATH.

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly are deeply saddened to learn of the death on February 6, 1999, of one of Cayce's most prominent citizens and public officials, Mr. D. L. Wicker, Sr.; and

Whereas, Mr. Wicker was a native of North Carolina and moved to South Carolina in 1941 as the agent in charge of the Seaboard Airline Railroad, now known as CSX, where he was employed for fifty years prior to his retirement; and

Whereas, he was a part of Cayce government for more than forty years as a councilman, mayor pro tem, and planning commissioner, last serving as city councilman prior to his retirement in 1992. He also served on the Central Midlands Regional Planning Council, and in these positions made an immense contribution to the growth and development of Cayce; and

Whereas, Mr. Wicker was a devoted member of the Cayce United Methodist Church where he served in a number of capacities and was perhaps best known for giving generations of children treats of candy as they left Sunday school; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, would like to extend their sincere condolences to his daughter, sons, and other members of his family upon the death of this outstanding public official and community leader. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly express their deepest sympathy to the family of Mr. D. L. Wicker, Sr., of Cayce, upon his death.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to his daughter, Mrs. Susan Bruorton of West Columbia, and to his sons, Mr. Doyle L. Wicker, Jr., of Cameron, North Carolina, and Mr. Thomas "Tommy" Alton Wicker of Jacksonville, Florida.
