A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE MS. CHRISTA COMPTON OF LEXINGTON, AN ENGLISH TEACHER AT RICHLAND NORTHEAST HIGH SCHOOL IN RICHLAND SCHOOL DISTRICT TWO, UPON BEING NAMED THE 2001 SOUTH CAROLINA TEACHER OF THE YEAR.

Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives are extremely pleased to learn that Ms. Christa Compton of Lexington has been chosen as the 2001 South Carolina Teacher of the Year; and

Whereas, she is an English teacher at Richland Northeast High School in Richland School District Two where she began her teaching career in 1993; and

Whereas, Ms. Compton, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Compton of Lexington, is a Presidential Scholar graduate of Lexington High School where her life-long ambition to teach began taking form as she participated in the Teacher Cadet Program; and

Whereas, she graduated from the University of Virginia, where she was a Phi Beta Kappa and a Jefferson Scholar, the school's top undergraduate scholarship program, earning a Bachelor of Arts in English with Distinction and a Master's in Teaching; and

Whereas, Ms. Compton is an exceptional role model who, by example and leadership, creates a nurturing and challenging learning environment, and who delights in the insights of her students and revels in their accomplishments; and

Whereas, not only is she an inspiring teacher revered by her students, but also she is a compassionate and caring individual; keenly interested in the lives of her students as individuals; and

Whereas, Ms. Compton has been in great demand as a presenter and participant in education events locally, as well as throughout the State and nationally, called upon to share her enthusiasm, wisdom, and vision for her profession; and

Whereas, she was one of twenty teachers selected nationally to participate in a National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Institute and she is currently working toward her National Certification; and

Whereas, the recognition and honors bestowed upon Ms. Compton, in her relatively short but extremely full career, are an amazing tribute to her dedication to the profession; and

Whereas, her talents are by no means limited to the classroom or the educational arena, she is an accomplished musician, and a faithful member and active leader in the Lutheran Church; and

Whereas, Ms. Compton is the essence of excellence in education and greatly admired and respected by her fellow educators throughout the teaching profession; and

Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives are honored to have the opportunity to recognize this truly exceptional teacher who brings great pride to the teaching profession, Richland Northeast High School, and the State of South Carolina. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives, by this resolution, congratulate Ms. Christa Compton of Lexington, an English teacher at Richland Northeast High School in Richland School District Two, upon being named the 2001 South Carolina Teacher of the Year.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Ms. Christa Compton of Lexington, South Carolina.
