TO COMMEND AND CONGRATULATE THE STAFF, FACULTY, AND STUDENTS OF HAND MIDDLE SCHOOL OF COLUMBIA ON THE OCCASION OF HAND MIDDLE SCHOOL BEING SELECTED AS A 1999-2000 BLUE RIBBON SCHOOL BY THE UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION.
Whereas, Hand Middle School of Columbia has been selected as a 1999-2000 Blue Ribbon School by the United States Department of Education; and
Whereas, established in 1982, the Blue Ribbon Schools Program celebrates elementary and secondary schools in alternate years and has evolved to place strong emphasis on school improvement; and
Whereas, the Blue Ribbon Award is the most prestigious education award in the country, and this award distinguishes Hand Middle School for its excellence in leadership, teaching, curriculum, student achievement, parental involvement, and community support; and
Whereas, when evaluating nominations the Department of Education looks for overall school quality, including challenging standards and curriculum, excellent teaching, ongoing professional development by teachers and staff members, a safe and supportive school environment, family and community partnerships that contribute to school quality, and high on improving student performance on measures of achievement; and
Whereas, the Department of Education cited Hand Middle School for its significant increase in test scores, its exemplary fine arts and extracurricular programs, its award-winning writing programs, technology in the curriculum interdisciplinary studies, and its continuing parental and community involvement; and
Whereas, in the words of Jeanne Stiglbauer, Principal, "The Blue Ribbon Award represents a great honor for the students, teachers, staff members, and parents of Hand Middle School and celebrates the accomplishments and diversity of our school family. As we worked our way through the extensive application process for this award, we reflected on our accomplishments and learned where we can continue to grow. It was a wonderful experience to work together toward this goal and gave us the opportunity to work with members of our entire community".; and
Whereas, representatives from Hand Middle School will attend a national ceremony later in the year in Washington, D.C. when they will be congratulated by education officials and will receive a Blue Ribbon flag and commemorative plaque. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the House of Representatives, by this resolution, commend and congratulate the staff, faculty, and students of Hand Middle School of Columbia on the occasion of Hand Middle School being selected as a 1999-2000 Blue Ribbon School by the United States Department of Education.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Hand Middle School of Columbia.
